UNIBEN ADMISSION SCREENING EXERCISE 2017/2

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) Admission Screening Exercise for 2017/2018 Academic Session; to be conducted by UNIBEN CONSULT NIGERIA LIMITED, is rescheduled to take place between 28th September 2017 and 10th October 2017 in designated centres within the Ugbowo Campus of the University. 

The Screening Exercise shall be conducted using the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. All candidates are expected to be seated, latest one hour before the stipulated time for their screening exercise 

ELIGIBILITY - PLEASE NOTE: 

Candidate must fulfill the following criteria: 

Only candidates who applied through JAMB for the 2017/2018 UTME Admission and chose the University of Benin as First Choice and scored 200 and above are eligible for this Screening Exercise

Obtained at least five (5) credit passes at GCE O/L, SSCE, NECO, or their equivalent. The subjects must include English Language, and Mathematics (for courses for which a credit in mathematics is required) as well as three other relevant subjects (four if excluding mathematics); at not more than two sittings.

METHOD OF APPLICATION

The procedure for the 2017/2018 Admission Screening application for first time applicants is as follows: 

Candidates are advised to have a valid e-mail account before starting the application process. 

1. Visit www.uniben.edu Click on Student Portal
2. Click on Applicants and then select UNIBEN ADMISSION SCREENING 2017/2018
3. Click on Register for application at the top left of the displayed page to proceed.
4. Enter your Surname Exactly as written on the JAMB Registration slip, and JAMB Registration number. Immediately, your ID and Password will be displayed on the browser
5. Back On uniben.waeup.org click on 'Login' (top right of the front page).
6. Enter your username and the password to login.
7. To start the application process, please click on 'Application record' and provide all required information and upload your passport photograph.
8. Upload a Recent and clear 1” x 1” COLOURED passport photograph with red background in JPEG format only. 
   Great care should also be taken to follow the specified formats on the UNIBEN website and portal. 
   
   NOTE that the photograph uploaded will be the only valid ID for all admitted candidates throughout their stay in the University of Benin. FAILURE TO UPLOAD THE SPECIFIED PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH WILL LEAD TO DISQUALIFICATION and failure/forfeitures of admission.
9. To pay for the Application, click on “Add online payment ticket” at the bottom of the page, then click on “Pay with Remita” on the top left corner of the page, follow the instruction to pay the application fee of N 2,000:00; (This excludes Service Charges), the admission screening exercise past questions for N1,500:00 (optional); with a valid ATM-Enabled Card from any Commercial Bank in Nigeria
10. A link is displayed “Download past questions to practice upon successful payment
11. Preview and confirm your information before submitting your application online. (No correction will be accepted after the closing date).
12. Go back online on the appointed date to print out the acknowledgement slip that contains your specific screening schedule

The Emir of Katsina, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Abdulmumin Kabir Usman, was appointed the Chancellor of the University of Ilorin on May, 2015. He takes over from the Dein of Agbor, His Royal Majesty, Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi I, who had held the position since March 20, 2006.

The First Class Katsina royal father, who was born in 1951, is the fifth Chancellor of the University of Ilorin since its inception about 40 years ago.

The four previous Chancellors of the University were: the Emir of Bedde, HRH Umar Sulaiman, (1978-1981); the AkuUka of Wukari, HRH K.S.A. MasaIbi II, (1981-2000); the Amayanabo of Nembe, Justice Ambrose Allagoa, (2000-2006) and the Dein of Agbor Kingdom, HRH Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi I (2006-2015).

Alhaji Usman was previously the Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. He was turbaned the 50th Emir of Katsina on July 5, 2008, succeeding his father, the late Alhaji Muhammadu Kabir Usman, the 49th Emir of Katsina, who died on March  8, 2008.

  Academic Planning Unit 

The Academic Planning Unit was established in 1979. It operates in the Vice-Chancellor's office. The unit is headed by a Director, who is a high ranking academic staff, and is assisted by some professional and other supportive staff. The Director of the Unit is directly responsible to Vice-Chancellor for the day to day administration of the Unit.

The Function of the Academic Planning Unit includes:

• To guide and monitor the university's activities in accordance with the statutory goals, mission and vision of the university.
• To ensure the most economical arrangement and operation which guarantee the achievement of high quality in the academic programming of the university.
• Enrolment Projection and Assessment needs as basis for resource allocation in the University
• Using information on University academic materials and facilities for planning
• Preparation of National Universities Commission (NUC) Annual Estimates for the University
• Annual updating, analysis and interpretation of data for the planning, preparation of the University budget and subsequent resource allocation within the ambit of the approved budget
• Analyzing and monitoring of resources allocation and utilization within the University
• Searching/Soliciting for Fellowships, Scholarships, Technical Assistance, External Aids etc for staff to enhance teaching, research and development
• Determination of adequate staff strength and requirement to guide against any possible excess staffing and its attendant results
• Sourcing for linkages and collaborations with other Universities/Institutions/Organizations in order to exchange collegiality across the globe
• General distribution and administration of the Direct Teaching and Laboratory Cost Allocation to departments and rendering adequate feedback to NUC
• Preparation of the University Rolling Plans in conjunction with the Physical Planning Unit
• Preparation of Strategic Plan and ensuring University’s compliance with the provisions of the plan in its implementation
• Preparation, implementation and general review of Academic Brief
• Continuous evaluation of academic programmes, rationalization of courses, merging/splitting of departments/units
• Participating in University curricular revision and ensuring that University complies with procedures and guidelines on new programme development

Management hails lecturers, students’ sacrifice, understanding

The management of the University of Ilorin has commended members of the institution's academic staff and students for their understanding and sacrifice in the face of the on-going strike by the non-teaching staff.

The commendation was made during a meeting the Governing Council Chairman, Dr. Abdullah Jibril Oyekan, and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, held with officials of the institution's Academic Staff Union last Thursday (February 7, 2018).

Speaking at the meeting, the Council Chairman noted with delight that academic activities are going on smoothly especially that the lecturers have to tidy up their work spaces themselves and perform other extra functions that are ordinarily beyond their duty calls.  

This, according to Dr. Oyekan, is a show of high level of sacrifice that could not go unnoticed.

On his part, the Vice-Chancellor particularly commended the lecturers for their dutifulness despite the fact that their earned allowances are yet to be released. He however, pledged that efforts are ongoing to ensure the release of the already approved allowance very soon.

While asking for more cooperation from the academic staff, especially in view of the impending First Semester examinations, Prof. Abdulkareem pledged to make sure that all the lecturers that participate in the examinations are properly remunerated.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the Unilorin ASUU executive for showing good leadership and promised to always support them.

Prof. Abdulkareem, who also commended the students of the institution for showing understanding in view of the extant situation on campus, urged them to conduct themselves properly during the period of the examinations.

After your details(i.e. UTME Reg. No, Fullname) appear on the next page, you can then proceed to make your payment. Cultism: Professor, lecturers arrested in Ambrose Alli University.

Some lecturers of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma have been arrested by the Edo state police command over alleged cult-related activities.

Haliru Gwandu, the state commissioner of police, made this known to journalists in Benin on Tuesday.

Gwandu said a double-barrel gun, single-barrel gun and one pump action gun were recovered from one of the arrested academics, a professor.

“The professor was arrested. He was granted bail. The case is under investigation,” he said.

The commissioner said the arrests were made in response to distress calls from members of the university community.

“It was a distress call from the community; the university community made a call that cult groups were killing and they killed so many,” he said.

“And at the time when they (policemen) went to inspect a site, they discovered more than 14 beheaded students at that particular time.

“We have a lot of issues with that particular university. There are some senior lecturers that were apprehended with firearms.

“So, we are going to arrest those who are mentoring and those who are real cultists and charge them to court. There is no going back.”

JAMB New Admission Modalities 8 things every Nigerian student must know

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board,
(JAMB) has issued its guideline for admission
process into Federal, State and Private
Universities in Nigeria for the 2016/2017
Academic Session.
The announcement followed a week of meeting
with universities and other tertiary institutions
in Nigeria.
Here are eight things Nigerian students must
understand from the new guidelines.
1. The new method uses a point system, which
is divided into other processes. The board said,
“before a candidate can be considered for
screening, he/she must have been given
provisional admission by JAMB.”
2. The second process, the board said, was the
point system where admission would depend on
the point tally of the candidate.
“JAMB’s provisional admission no longer makes
much sense this year, your points tally will
decide your faith. The points are evenly spread
out between your O’level and JAMB results to
provide a level playing field for all.”
3. Any candidate who submits only one result
which contains his/her relevant subjects already
has 10 points, the exam could be NECO, WAEC,
GCE etc, but any candidate who has 2 sittings
only gets 2 points. So this means that aspirants
with only one result are at an advantage but
only barely.
4. The next point grades fell into the O’level
grades where each grade has it’s equivalent
point; A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks, so
the better the candidates’ grades, the better his
or her chances of securing admission this year.
5. The next point is the UTME scores where
each score range has its equivalent point which

6. JAMB revealed that Universities would still
have to screen applicants at the end of the
admission process, using this point system. The
Universities would charge the applicants fees
for the screening.
7. Cut off marks will be released by schools
this year in the form of points and not marks. If
a school declares it’s cut off mark for Medicine
as 90 points and JAMB grants a candidate with
250 a provisional admission but his/her total
points falls short of the 90 points, then he/she
will lose the admission.
8. The point system for direct entry would soon
be released by JAMB even as the screening
exercise would replace the scrapped UTME.

Opinion: What shocked me most in passing UTME

JAMB begins UTME on February 29
After studying very hard for 2016 UTME, after
having sleepless night, after solving JAMB
past Q&A to pass my exams with flying
colours, it was really unfortunate that what i
reaped is different from what i sowed.
March 2, 2016 is unforgettable day in the
history of my life. I’ll call it a day of
FRUSTRATION! My UTME exams were
supposed to take place at 2:00pm. But due
to lack of preparation and organization from
both JAMB and exams centre agents; we
were left for good three hours helplessly
outside the hall.
We don’t have any option than to keep
staying inside the scorching sun waiting for
the JAMB agents to screen us. Though, with
such
physiological stress, most of us were not
discouraged and keep waiting. At 5:00pm, we
were screened and allowed to sit randomly
without
any seat number.

It was really unfortunate that we were left to
write the exams with substandard computers.
What shocked us most is after spending just
only 50mins, the generator just shut down!
It took the operators 30 minutes before they
fixed the problem. This happened twice
during the exams. We were left with just little
time to answer more than 200 questions out
of the 300 objective questions.
What surprise me most is how two of the
JAMB agents were passing papers to some
of the candidates inside the hall. After the
examinations, I later asked and I was told by
a candidate that those candidates paid for
special
centres.
The following day when my scores were sent
to me, I wasn’t surprised when I scored 230
due to the problems we faced during the
UTME examination. But what surprised me
most that I was given the highest score in
English which i didn’t even answer most of
the questions due to shortage of time.
While biology which I was expecting to score
46 out 50 questions, was the lowest. How
can I score a very high score in English when
I didn’t answer most of the questions?

Those problems did not only happen at
King’s Garden Brigade, Kano but most
centres in the country experienced either
systems failure, substandard computers,
power failure, postponement etc.
But it is really unfortunate and unjust for
Minister of Education Adamu Adamu to make
us the scapegoats of the problem faced by
JAMB. Why will Mr. Adamu just wake up one-
day and destroy the futures of those
hardworking Jambites that were frustrated by
JAMB?
Why will you leave us in the hand of those
that are trying to destroy our future? I’ll not
forgive JAMB and Mr. Adamu for destroying
good 10 years I was preparing to become a
pharmacist in future.
I think it’s unjust to scrap post-UTME at this
critical time. I’m really confused in life! I’m in
a state of depression. I don’t know where to
get justice from. I struggled to get Mr.
President phone number from one of his
closed ally in Kano. I texted him on June 3
2016 about how our life is in danger due to
injustice we got from JAMB and Mr. Adamu.
I told him the depression I’m facing and how
my life is in danger. But till date, I didn’t get
any reply from Mr. President. If the message
wouldn’t reach him I’m using the opportunity
to call on our competent president, senators,
representatives, governors to save us from
the hands of JAMB and Mr. Adamu.
